      The breakfast dishes were still on the table when Elikapeka Hayes poured herself a second cup of coffee and settled into the chair at the head of the table. Through the sliding glass doors she could see the backyard, the pool catching the late May morning light, the canal beyond it glittering, and the tall white mast of Frank Bellardi's sailboat swaying gently at the dock. Andy and her mother had been gone just over an hour. She had the morning ahead of her, quiet except for her daughters.
