### STORY\par
From Elikapeka's viewpoint at the kitchen window, the final half-hour before Emma's party begins sees logistics resolved (tiki torches placed, chairs sourced by Jorge, Bobby Carpenter proving unexpectedly gifted at welcoming arrivals), the Hayes cousins immediately causing pool chaos upon arrival, Emma absorbing the day's accumulated negotiations and concessions before stepping outside to claim the afternoon on her own terms, and the first guest car arriving as Elikapeka, steadied by Susan's competent company and the sight of Andy at ease in the yard, sets down her cup and declares herself ready.\par
\par
At Emma's pool party, Lizzie舒?ordinarily bookless and reluctant舒?is deliberately positioned by Hannah Eliot and introduced to Will Fontaine, a sun-blonde, blue-eyed boy whose presence triggers Lizzie's first-ever involuntary romantic awareness; their immediate, unguarded argument about Tom Bombadil and the Council of Elrond reveals a rare intellectual compatibility that dissolves her anxiety, leaving them mid-debate beside the pool, the prior version of Lizzie舒?defined by detachment and her book舒?quietly retired, and the nature of their connection still unresolved but clearly begun.\par
\par
From Emma's close-third viewpoint on her sixteenth birthday, she blows out her candles, shares a wordless raspberry-cake acknowledgment with her mother Elikapeka, surveys roughly eleven male prospects including Harrison Webb and Daniel Park, and is arrested by the unexpected sight of her bookish younger sister Lizzie making spontaneous, absorbed contact with a boy named Will brought by Hannah舒?a development Emma registers with genuine wonder rather than envy舒?while her unnamed father monitors the yard from the patio's edge, leaving Emma's goal of a first kiss unresolved but deferred with confident optimism into the remainder of the night.\par

### RECALL\par
(none)\par
\par
### PREVIOUS\par
Lizzie was standing with a boy whose name Emma was now reconstructing舒?*Will, Hannah brought him, she'd barely registered him at the time*舒?and they were talking the way you talk when you've forgotten the party around you exists. Standing close. Their body language had that specific unguarded quality that Emma, as a student of these things, recognized immediately and catalogued with some precision.\par
\par
Her sister reached out and touched the boy's hand.\par
\par
Emma stopped moving.\par
\par
Lizzie. Her *sister*. Her bookish, shy, perpetually reading, forever-in-her-own-world, had to be practically dragged to any social event within a five-mile radius sister. Lizzie, who had brought a book to the party. Lizzie, who had looked at Emma with that patient, tolerant expression approximately forty-five minutes ago that clearly meant *I love you but I am here under mild duress*.\par
\par
That Lizzie was touching a boy's hand and laughing.\par
\par
Emma stared.\par
\par
The boy舒?Will舒?said something and Lizzie shook her head and said something back and the boy's face did the thing that faces do when a person says something genuinely surprising and good, that involuntary bright opening, and he laughed, and Lizzie laughed, and they were still standing close and neither of them was looking anywhere else.\par
\par
Emma felt something move through her chest that took her a second to identify.\par
\par
It was not envy, exactly. It was more like wonder. Like watching something grow faster than you expected.\par
\par
She thought: *Lizzie.*\par
\par
She thought: my nerdy baby sister is doing better in the boy department than I am at my own party and I cannot even be angry about it.\par
\par
She thought: good for her. I mean it. *Good for her.*\par
\par
She turned back to her own side of the party, smiling with the full warmth of it, and found Mai Lin at her elbow again with two new plates of cake.\par
\par
"Second piece?" Mai Lin said.\par
\par
"Absolutely," Emma said.\par
\par
She took the plate. The night was warm and the pool was lit and her thirty closest friends were all around her and someone was taking another photo and the flash went off again and this time Emma was ready for it, was already grinning into it, was already mid-laugh when the white light bloomed across the yard.\par
\par
She thought: I still need a kiss.\par
\par
She thought: I have all night.\par
\par
She thought: this is the best birthday I have ever had.\par
\par
She took a bite of cake and let herself back into the party.\par
\par
### NOTES\par

Early evening, Friday, mid June, 2000. Emma's birthday.\par
\par
### BRIEF\par
This episode is told in third person from the viewpoint of Mai Lin Wen.\par
Mai Lin was having a fabulous time at Emma舗?s party. She wore a white string bikini which accented her black hair, tanned skin, and dark eyes. She舗?d done her makeup to make her eyes appear larger and she wore red lipstick. She knew she was a babe and she was flirting incessantly with every one of the cute boys, especially that hunky boy Tyler Marsh. She was a good girl; she舗?d never let the boys take advantage of her but that didn舗?t mean she didn舗?t want the boys to try. That was part of the fun.\par
After the cake was served and eaten, the boys and girls began to mix in a chaotic frenzy. Music was playing and some girls were dancing with cute boys on the patio. Naughtiness was at a minimum as the adults were keeping a close watch on the party, keeping things under control. She sat on the edge of the pool, kicking her feet, splashing cute boys in the pool, and they splashed her back playfully. Tyler was in the pool and she used both feet to splash him, succeeding perfectly in driving water straight into his face. She giggled hysterically as the boy grabbed her feet, pulled her into the water and dunked her. She surfaced with a mouthful of water and spit it into his face, which shocked the boy and gave her an intense fit of giggles as she escaped from his attempted grasp. One of the other boys dunked him and she turned her attention to the other boys in the pool.\par
She saw Emma dive into the deep end, swim underwater and come up behind Tyler, jumping on his back and attempting to dunk him. Somehow the girl got on his shoulders. Another girl did the same, and suddenly a half dozen girls found themselves on boys shoulders and the shrieks of laughter filled the air. Mai Lin found a boy, one of Emma舗?s cousins, climbed onto his back and joined in the fun. The boy declared his intention to dunk Emma, so off they went, Mai Lin on his shoulders, to dislodge Emma from Tyler舗?s shoulders.\par
